Week 3 Reading A (extra credit reading)

Myth-Folklore Unit: Women Saints of the Golden Legend

Reading: St. Juliana

Reading summary:
St. Juliana was to married to provost of Nicomedia (Eulogious), however she would not marry him until he was baptized in the Catholic faith. This angers her father and she is beaten and taken back to Eulogious, where she once again tells him that if he joins her faith she will be glad to marry him. This angered the provost and he beat her, eventually throwing her in prison.

In prison, Juliana was visited by Satan disguised as an angel who claims he was sent by God to warn her. Because of this, she prayed to God asking him to show her why he is upset with her. She places her hands on the "angel" and asks his real identity. He says he was sent by his father Beelzebub to do bad things on earth. She questions him pretty intently and decides to let him go. Juliana then prays to God explaining that she had overcome Satan's disguise.

The provost then brought a wheel of iron between two pillars being pulled by two horses, surrounded by eight knights, crushing Juliana so that she is all bloody. God then broke the wheel and healed Juliana's wounds instantly. After this, the men present did not doubt Jesus as God. This angered the provost and he demanded that Juliana be put in a pot of boiling water, however when she neared the water, God made it cold. The provost then demanded her beheaded, when God intervened again.
